Rama, rescued by Wildlife SOS

Rama’s Journey to Freedom: Rescued from Captivity by Wildlife SOS

This article includes images and details that some readers might find distressing.

In the heart of India, a story of resilience and hope unfolds as Rama, an Indian elephant, breaks free from a life of captivity and cruelty. This tale is not only about Rama’s rescue but also sheds light on the broader issue of the exploitation of begging elephants and the crucial role organizations like Wildlife SOS play in their rehabilitation.

Rama’s early life was marred by exploitation as a begging elephant. These animals are often forced to traverse long distances from village to village, enduring malnutrition and untreated injuries, all while being compelled to perform tricks, give blessings, and offer rides to tourists.

Wildlife SOS works on the front line, rescuing and rehabilitating numerous elephants, many of whom have suffered the same fate as Rama. The cruelty inflicted upon these majestic creatures starts at a young age, where calves are cruelly ‘broken in’ with electric prods and metal bullhooks, used to tear at their ears and flesh.

Rama's Spiked chains

Rama’s mistreatment reached a gruesome level as he was permanently made to wear spiked chains on all four legs. This has resulted in chronic septic wounds that may take years to heal, leaving both physical and emotional scars. Upon arrival, Rama was found to be suffering from severe dehydration and was emaciated, and his ears showed the rips and scars left from the use of bullhooks and spears. It’s hardly surprising that Rama no longer associates humans with kindness, and so the dedicated team at Wildlife SOS are working tirelessly to win Rama’s trust – this includes giving Rama a variety of treats, like bananas (his favourite), watermelon, papaya, and sugarcane, as they aim to undo the trauma he experienced at the hands of his previous keepers.

X-rays have revealed a fractured back, a painful reminder of the heavy loads Rama was forced to carry throughout much of his life. This serves as a stark warning to tourists about the physical toll these animals endure when used for rides and performances. We encourage readers to consider the impact of their choices. Tourists are urged to refrain from riding elephants, as the demand for such activities directly contributes to the exploitation of these gentle giants. By saying no to elephant rides, tourists can play their role in reducing the exploitation of these magnificent creatures.

Despite his fear and nervousness around humans, Rama is young enough to have a chance at a full recovery. Wildlife SOS is committed to providing him with the care and support needed to ensure he can live a long and happy life in a safe environment. Rama’s story is a poignant reminder of the challenges faced by elephants used in the begging industry. Through the dedicated efforts of organizations like Wildlife SOS, there is hope for a brighter future for Rama and others like him. As advocates for wildlife, it is crucial that we spread awareness and make ethical choices to ensure the well-being and conservation of these majestic beings.
